Signaling Pathways in Angiogenesis

Introduction

The main subject of this research group is studying how the key enzymes in signalling pathways are regulating angiogenesis process in development and in pathological situations such as cancer.

 

Angiogenesis is a complex process that involves coordination and interaction of different cell types, of the extracellular matrix and various grown factors and cytokines. In order to form a vascular network that manages the metabolic need for oxygen of each organ, it is necessary that blood vessels create a network following a hierarchy and an appropriate pattern. The achieving of this angiogenic process involves the formation of new vessels and their fusion and finally remodeling of the primary network by vascular regression.

 

Researchers begin to be quite aware of how this receptor regulates extracellular processes. However it is widely unknown the role of the signaling molecules to these receptors. The studies of the research group are focused on understanding as a key signaling enzymes, such as the PI3K regulates different steps in angiogenesis. To address these issues in the laboratory we use constitutive and conditional mutant mice, from the different members of the PI3K path. As a final focus, the studies of the research group aims to explore whether the knowledge obtained in the models are applicable to the cancer, and obtain new therapies more effective against cancer than current ones.

. Describe the role of inhibition of PI3K as a potential new anti-angiogenic therapy, using singenic and spontaneous tumor models.
